Reshi Peer was one of the greatest saints of Kashmir. He was born in the 17th century to Pandit Gobind Kaul of Alikadal. It is said that Reshi Peer’s mother’s mother prayed earnestly to a holy sacred spring for her daughter to become a mother. One day she heard the voice from the spring which advised her to bring her daughter to the spring water and smell the beautiful bunch of the flowers. She obeyed and her daughter became pregnant. As the delivery time approached, Reshi Peer’s mother went with her husband to her in-laws place at Alikadal via boat. The legend says Reshi Peer was born on that boat at Sopore. A temple has been constructed at this place and is known as ‘Reshi sund mandar’. Reshi Peer married when he was 7 years of age; however at the age of 12 he lost his interest in all the worldly desires and devoted all his time doing Sadhna in the temples. In pursuit of finding a Guru, he crawled all his way on his knees to the Hari Parbat, daily for 40 days. It is said on the 40th day, when he was at Deviangan (open space below the hill), Mata gave him darshan and told him the first man he will come across will be his Guru. Soon after Reshi Peer left Deviangan he found Saint Mastana (also known as Pandit Krishna Kar) and bowed to him. The legend says that Saint Mastana did not say even a single word to Reshi Peer, however he bolted and reached Reshi Peer’s house before him. After reaching the house, he asked Reshi Peer’s mother to give him Reshi’s Chellum and puffed some smoke. Then he asked her to give this Chellum back to Reshi Peer.

As the legend goes, it is said as soon as Reshi Peer puffed smoke from this Chellum his Gyan Netra opened and he became God-intoxicated Trikaldarshi. After this he continued intense Sadhna for 14 and a half years. It is said while bathing he used to throw hot charcoal on his body instead of water. After this he became to be known as Peer Pandit Padshah and helped many people out of their worldly atrocities.

Another legend says that when Aurangzeb got to know about some saint being called as “Padshah” he became very annoyed and sent a messenger to arrest and bring Reshi Peer to Delhi. As soon as the messenger reached Reshi Peer’s house he was offered food and room to stay. Reshi Peer told him that he will go with him in the morning. However, as the legend continues it is said, Reshi Peer, went to meet Aurangzeb at night itself and he became convinced of the divine power Reshi Peer had. Aurangzeb not just canceled the orders of his arrest but also fixed 14 pies as Niaz to him. Till now this practice of offering 14 pies as Niaz to Reshi Peer continues among Kashmiri Hindus.
