The state of Jammu and Kashmir has created a Wildlife Sanctuary under Wildlife Protection Act. It covers an area of 141 square kilometers.This park has been protected since 1910, however it took a form of a National park in 1978. It is located in the western Himalayan region at an altitude ranging from 5500 ft to 14000 ft bove sea level which gives it a vast variation in teram of flora and fauna. The Dachigam park can be seen in three level – one with the tree line, second with the rock mountains and third with the crevices. In the interior of the park is Marsar lake which is the source of Dagwan river which is famous for trout.
Flora
The flora consists of broad leaved species of coniferous forests, alpine pastures, grassy meadows covered with colorful flowers, waterfalls and scrub vegetation.
